In August of 1991, The Bishops performed on TNN's flagship program, "Nashville Now." Doing a little "Front Porch Singin'" are (left to right) Steve Perkins, Mark Bishop, Kenneth Bishop, and Kenny Bishop. At the end of show, host Ralph Emery would always "call the roll" of that night's guests. Along with the Bishops were country singer Lacy J Dalton, some guy from the TV show "General Hospital" that sung an interesting tune
called, "Cut Me, I Bleed Country" (I hope he stuck to daytime TV), and some bona fide world champion duck callers. Here, radio and TV legend Ralph Emery is in a deep conversation with Steve Perkins. Ralph was thrilled that Steve used to play Ralph's radio show at one of the several radio stations Steve worked at before joining the group. We had a great time on the show, especially the segment with the duck callers! The First Federated Church in Des Moines, IA was the venue for our "Once In A Lifetime" video. This was a great church to sing at and the video turned out super too.
In this photo, Kenny is giving Steve the "thumbs up." This isn't because of Steve's prowess on the bass guitar (although "back in the day" Steve was one of the best). This was the signal to start the next song. As band leader,
it was Steve's responsibility to make sure everyone started and ended together. What a job description!
Playing with us that day was Brian McGee on drums, Steve on bass guitar, and Johnny Sansom on piano. Our guest musician was studio player extraoridnare, Bruce Watkins. Bruce has played on everyone's album at one time or another. Some of you Southern Gospel veterans may recall that Bruce was a member of the Hemphills band back in the 1970s.
At the time of this video, Bruce was a member of Dolly Parton's band and wore his "Dolly suit" for the video. What a guy! This photo is one that has never been seen.
It was taken on a train in Nashville during
a photo shoot for the "Once In a Lifetime"
recording. That's Kenny, Pappy, Mark,
Steve Perkins, and Johnny Sansom. This picture is also one that never
made the cover of a project. I
don't know why. It was such a
good looking bunch. Now this picture, you might have seen...
or at least part of it. What you didn't see
in the official promo pic was the table in
front of us or the cloth light reflector that
was sitting on top of it which was used to
brighten our faces. With the release of each new recording, hundreds of pictures are taken. Out of that many pictures, there are bound to be a couple that turn out like this one. Several years ago, the Singing News released these cards featuring several Southern Gospel artists. This is the card that featured Pappy. Kenny's Singing News card. Mark's Singing News card.
